In Response To: The REAL difference between Intermediate and Open (Phil Simborg)

pretty much everyone has weighed in on what constitutes Champ/Open vs interm/adv versus novice...having run tournaments it is very simple..in many cases it comes down to what a player feels he can afford to pay to enter a tournament.. It is sad but many times novices paying $30 or $40 cannot or will not ante up the extra $75-$100 to play interm/adv even though they are capable of competing at that level. Why ? they probably feel they are not likely to cash, as they are in the lower grouping of interm/adv players. Not everyone is a gambler and willing to throw money around. Same goes for so many interm/adv players that would probably give the open div a shot but not when it costs $250-$500 versus $100-200 for the interm level. Not at all sure it is fair but to get these players to try moving up may require handicapping entry fees to encourage players to play where they "might" belong. To some degree tourn directors have to decide : do i let this person play "down" and have a better chance of winning or do i tell them they must play up and likely not have them compete in the tournament at all.tough choices...
