Chess cheating

I recall when Ricky Williams, the football player, tested positive for marijuana a few years back. Some reporter went and talked to his mom (kind of a mean thing to do). Mom insisted, "Ricky never uses drugs, he told me so!" Kind of made me angry - if you're fortunate enough to have a mom who loves you unconditionally, you shouldn't lie to her like that!
As for chess, maybe I'm just an old-fashioned guy, but I'm surprised they let people use electronic devices to keep score. It barely takes any time to enter your paper-and-pencil score into a database after the tournament is over, and everybody knows there's potential for cheating where electronic devices are allowed. The article makes it sound like using these things is the norm, though.
