The main issue!

The answer to the question between theory and playing is simple. Take a lesson from Abe Lincoln: "If I had 4 hours to chop down a tree, I'd spend 3 sharpening my axe."

I have read many books on achieving excellence and THEY ALL recommend "deliberate practice." Tiger Woods did not become good at putting or driving by playing golf. He spent hours on the green practicing his putting, and hours on the practice tee perfecting his swing for drives.

You will get good at bearing off by studying bearing off and learning all the principles and putting in every position you can think of and seeing what XG says is the right play and don't move on until you understand why. If you don't know why, get help.

Do the same thing with blitzing plays; back games, primes, holding games, racing games, tempo hits, slotting plays, early game play. Then do it with all kinds of cubes. Do each independently and master each area.

If you never play a game at all (except to play out a position you don't understand) you will truly learn the game. But you will have to play some just to break the tedium of study and just to test yourself and help identify your areas of weakness.
