As a teacher, Phil is wrong to use the word “percent.”

I think Phil Simborg is a great teacher. He combines mastery of his subject with considerable enthusiasm and ability as an educator and speaker. I say this, not as a private student, but as a fan of the video lessons he makes for the USBGF, and also as a witness of the beginner lessons he gave at the recent Golden Gate Open.

For some reason, however, Phil has not committed himself to correcting his description of equity.

If you give a student misinformation, as Phil does when he uses “percent” instead of “points of equity,” that is the information the student will master. In this thread, we have writers who are confused about the distinction. Although Phil may not be the direct source of the confusion, he has been cited in the discussion.

A teacher should not be surprised when a student learns his lessons.

Mike

P.S. I am not blindsiding Phil here. He will tell you that I have made the same points in private emails we have exchanged.
