Actually, the 50-move rule, as well as the 3-fold repetition rule only allows a player to claim a draw. Usually it will be to one player's benefit to do so, but it does happen that players play past these limits, either by not realizing that they may claim, or by both players still trying to look for an edge.

In any case the rules by themselves seem to put no upper bound of moves in a chess game.
