Both format and location need to be changed, I agree.

Bill, will you do some evaluation among the players in San Antonio to see what they like and don't like about your format? I believe it would be good if new and experimental formats are evaluated so that you (we) know what the participants (and ideally, non-participating BG players) like and don't like about it. Then you (and others) can build on this. If you want to pick this evaluation idea up and would like some free input from me, please let me know. I have some professional M&E experience.
