Spurred on by the messages from Seth and Chuck, I found this downloadable fix from Microsoft.

Microsoft is advertising this as a one-click, workaround solution. Microsoft has announced that an out-of-cycle update will be released on the 21st. Even if you install the workaround, you will need the update later. Scroll down until you see the Fix it! buttons. The one on the left installs the fix. When prompted select Run.

It installed fine on my Win7/IE9 machine, but, of course, your mileage may vary. Make a backup before attempting any software installation.
