I had never heard of Sargent either. I think the best players in the world in the mid to late 60s would have been John Crawford, Oswald Jacoby, Tim Holland, Barclay Cooke, Walter Cooke (his son), Tobias Stone, Art Dickman and Phillip Martyn. Joe Dwek, Lewis Deyong, Stan Tomchin and Billy Eisenberg seem to have established themselves a little later.

From recorded matches I have of these players, it would appear that typically they were playing at average pr levels of perhaps 8-10 or higher.

Paul Magriel when he became a major forces in the mid 70s, seems to have quickly raised the bar on top performance levels with an average pr level of about 6. By the early 80s, Magriel's influence on the game was so significant in my view that the top performers (Jason Lester, Roger Low and Mike Senkiewicz) where getting pr levels of about 5, which weren't substantial improved before bots started to make a major impact in about 1995-97.

Paul Magriel is the true father of modern backgammon.
