Sly won the 1983 amateur at age 21, and soon after began winning everything in sight. I was inactive during the mid- and late-eighties, but when I first returned, at the Fall 1989 tournament at Caesar's Tahoe, I found myself in a five-man field with a stranger named Wilcox Snellings. He was already "one of the five best players in the world." At least, that is what he told me, and I have always found Wil to be an honest guy.
Wil had been playing a lot in New York, and almost any player whose game developed there (and many young players elsewhere, including KG and Howard Ring), during the twenty year span from around 1975-1995 was directly or indirectly a "student of Magriel's."
