But as for your "unknown" inferior opponent, in a "general" position, would you still double early, not late? If so, please explain the rationale?

I would still heavily prefer to double early. Again, we're generalizing but in gammonish positions I believe players are more pessimistic than optimistic when they're facing the gammonish part of the board. (which they are of course, since we are doubling them) Also, as can always be argued, if they do take you have a game to play out and the more play the more your opponent errs.
