Decube?

Correct, Bob. If we fail to get the early dropper to drop, our gamble has failed. But would it not make for a better game if we could then suggest to our (generally timid) opponent that we put the cube back to where it was before we doubled, and on the same level, of course? Some would foolishly accept. Would not the option for players to 'decube' make for a more skilful game?
