I think this is a clear exception to that rule.
The roll plays too smoothly making both inner board points. What's going to happen after this play? Your opponent will try to safety his blot on his midpoint. If he does, fine, then you play your checkers from the 18pt. If he doesn't, great, you have a shot immediately and you still play the checkers from your 18pt.
If no immediate sequence shot is hit then you casually bide your time until he is forced off the anchor and then you attack either on the 5pt or possibly with your checker(s) still in the outfield.
As a side note, I wouldn't say we're "down 26 pips here". We rolled 65 so if we play safe after the roll we are down only 15 pips and the fact that we're not on roll. On top of that I think it's clear our opponent is going to have a fair amount of wastage so the racing lead isn't as big as it seems.
