Answer Number Correct Score A 15 0.0080 B 3 -0.0120 C 2 -0.0420
Here are some more examples for three answers A, B and C, with A correct, B a 0.020 error and C a 0.050 error, with the scores for different numbers of people out of 20 guessing A, B or C:
Answer Number Correct Score A 2 0.03150 B 9 0.01150 C 9 -0.0185
Answer Number Correct Score A 1 0.0250 B 15 0.0050 C 4 -0.0250
Answer Number Correct Score A 8 0.0180 B 8 -0.0020 C 4 -0.0320
Answer Number Correct Score A 14 0.0105 B 3 -0.0095 C 3 -0.0395 Notice that with any distribution, the score for the correct answer A) is always 0.020 ahead of the score for the B) and 0.050 ahead of the score for C). So you'd get the same ranking of contestants simply by giving them a 0, -0.20 or -0.050 on each question. For example, if these were 5 different questions on a quiz:
Your answers Your score (JL's method) Your score (simple method) AAAAA 0.093 0.000 AAABB 0.053 -0.040 AABBA 0.053 -0.040 AABAB 0.053 -0.040 AAABC 0.023 -0.070 BCAAA 0.023 -0.070 ABBBC -0.017 -0.110 CBBBA -0.017 -0.110 AABCC -0.027 -0.120 CCBAA -0.027 -0.120 CCACC -0.107 -0.200 ACCCC -0.107 -0.200 It also makes no difference for which questions which wrong answers were given. For example, compare the 2nd, 3rd and 4th responses in the table above:
Your answers Your score (JL's method) Your score (simple method) AAABB 0.053 -0.040 AABBA 0.053 -0.040 AABAB 0.053 -0.040 The first incorrectly answered questions that 12 and 6 people missed; the second, 19 and 12; and the third, 19 and 6. But they all get the same score.
