You might consider scoring a pass by just averaging the candidate errors. This would let you pre-compute the error score of pass, you would not have to wait until all answers are in before you could rate your first entry (containing passes), and the score for a pass would not be skewed if anyone would cheat by checking with a bot.

Also this makes the value of passing equal to picking at random, which makes some sense.
