Hoyle's recommended openings only lose 0.006 points in equity per game on average (0.009 if used in cubeful games), which is marginally better than Cooke, Dwek and Magriel achieved in their classic books from the 1970. This level of efficiency wasn’t excelled until the early 1980s until players started making the 3-point again with 53. But the residual error was still about 0.004 per game until strong bots showed us how to play all the rolls properly. Not a bad achievement for a 70 year old over 250 years ago who had no previous serious written knowledge to draw upon. Perhaps he had specially trained servants carrying out rollouts for him in between their normal duties of clearing out the deposits in the horse and donkey stables.
