What's "running up a score"?

Is it to annihilate your opponent where he doesn't even score a point?

For me any competetion is a measurement/comparison of playing strengths. I will try to give my best game and I expect my opponent to do the same. If I were losing bigtime at something, I would be infuriated if my opponent were to concede points/play poorly in order not to beat me too much. I want his best game so I know where I stand compared to him.

I once beat a friend 68-0 at 8-ball. That didn't make me feel bad. My friend was/is a hugely competitive person which made it even more fun. I am sure he would not have liked if I would have started to miss shots on purpose to let him win a few games.

In a fair, sporting competetion (like the Ryder Cup) every player is expected to play his best.
