Stick, if what you're saying is correct (that a tie = win for the defending champions), then why is there a column in this summary table counting ties?

It should only contain wins and losses, shouldn't it?

I think the wikipedia page is a good image of how people look at the results. You're right that at the moment, the team retaining the Ryder Cup with a tie, are the ones celebrating the most, but they also typical celebrate point 14,5, and a 14-14 "win" goes down in the history books as a tie.
