You cannot lose 14-14! Who won the competition two years earlier really should be irrelevant as to who gets to have possession of the cup. It is supposed to be the 2012 Ryder Cup; not the 2010/12 version.

Defining the winner in this way is totally like the spurious Away Goals Rule in soccer. The Away Goals Rule is shit. It devalues the competitions. You cannot lose 2-2 on aggregate! Where the goals were scored is intrinsically irrelevant. (They should have a playoff on a neutral ground, just like they used to in the 50's and 60's.)

If the golfers cannot or will not have some kind of a playoff, then they should accept that the match is drawn. Instead of pretending that it's sportsmanlike to concede this putt and that - or NOT concede - it would be more honourable if the players got together and agreed along the lines of:

'Look, if it's a tie then we SHARE the cup. Either the cup stays at some neutral venue for the two years (Asia?) or better still, one team has it for one year followed by the other.' (Or one has it for six months, then the other for a year, then the first team for the final six months; whatever.)

NO celebrating that they 'won' 14-14.
