I had the same feeling of de ja vu, but probably the position I remember was a similar one. 1-2 months ago a position where you hit a shot after a very late back game and then you have to play the rest of your roll appeared on this forum. Even the title and the words that Timothy used to present the position rang a bell in my memory. I remember the 11 roll to be mentioned by commentators for that position as well. Trying to explain my de na vu however I was unable to find such a position with the search engine.
Feeling that I have not understood the aforementioned position properly and seeing this one, I decided to play it a few times so that I understand it. I did come to understand what you say and an example that makes what u say obvious comes if someone thinks what happens when blue carries the idea behind 24/20*/15 fully. If blue plays now 24/20*/15 and in his next 2 rolls he moves the checker on the 15 only trying to cover the 4 point, then when white enters even if he enters on blue's ace he will be delighted that blue has one or none checkers at the outfield and that blue's back checkers position is underdeveloped. 23/18 is the very first step of the correct game plan and it gains no matter if white dances or hits. The fact that it is the very first step and that this position has a similarity with the opening nackgammon position give the feeling of the first roll that you mentioned. Finally another small part of the equation is that white might roll 45 and 46 next turn. Blue will be much better prepared against them after 24/20* 23/18. Also while i was playing this position I noted that blue is in no hurry to make white leave a second blot. Sure if white rolls 11 now then this is good news for blue, but If blue can contain that checker he will have countless opportunities in the future to make white leave a shot.
