Precedent?

>> In 1997 Europe, the reigning champions, led 14-13 going into the last match. Do you think anyone suggested: why bother playing the last match, since the cup was assured? The match was played, and was tied after 17 holes. On the 18th, Colin Montgomerie from Scotland made his putt for par and conceded a 15 foot putt to halve the match. Final score 14.5-13.5. Not 14-14. Not 15-13 either.
This one really nails the concept of playing to win, not to draw.
Monty played to secure Europe the victory, once done, he concedes to draw his match (not playing to win his own match, since the cup had been decided).
Had no-one cared for the 14-14 / 14.5-13.5 difference, they would have just drawn the hole earlier on. In this case, the US player could have offered the draw for 14.5-13.5 on the tee or on the green, before Monty holed. He didn't - because he had a chance to "loose by a tie", which he considered much more appealing than outright loosing.
As I noted earlier: When you do the stats, you have wins, losses and ties - the ties are counted as such, not wins or losses!
