As kickers get better there will be a point where it may be better to go for hang time at the expense of distance so the ball lands about the 1 yard line or so. It may be a small loss in expected field position but I am not even sure about that since seems a significant percentage of the big runbacks have a penalty on the return team. The chance of a fumble could swing that choice.

Next question; is it really possible to increase hang time for a kickoff?

What percent of kickoffs in NFL now are touchbacks? The new rules really take away several plays of interesting action.
