In Response To: Stupid Bearoff - ROLLOUT (Carlo Melzi)

The positions below both came up during the Danish Doubles Championship. From what I recall the first position actually occured in a situation where the cube was dead, so it didn't really matter, but after the match some kibitzers argued that 2/1 was better. For money 2/1 would have been very wrong or slightly wrong depending on the position of the cube.

With white owning the cube you want to avoid the position with two checkers on the threepoint, which gives white a proper redouble and owning the cube you want to set up a last roll position with a gap on the acepoint.

Later my doubles partner had this 51 to play:

He correctly played 3/2 and we discussed it a bit afterwards and from a quick count of misses thought, that it might not have mattered. Actually 3/2 wins less (probably a lot to do with how badly 33 plays) but cube considerations still make it right.
