difficult 5-5 to play

These are tough. In general, the more in the bag the gammon is the more likely you will be to make the dmp play. Here since both plays leave the same amount of immediate shots, the dmp play will be the one that doesn't leave the gap and allows the opponent to come in immediately with a six behind all your checkers. (10/5 6/1(3))
The reason for the more 'in the bag' theory is that the closer you are to always winning a gammon then there can be no great difference in the amount of gammons won so you can't make up all that many wins lost if there isn't a noticeable gammon difference. In this particular situation there are also no backgammons to factor into the equation.
I know of no magic formula to guide us in these situations only that rough and ready way to approach the problem. I'm sure if you move one of your opp's spares from his midpoint to his 6pt it would make a world of difference and I'd rip. Here though I just don't know.
