If you think you need to pass early in gammonish blitzes, you have read the tables without reading the book. It is a common mistake. You should actually be more willing to take early blitzes because the skill difference in playing the position gains you equity faster than you lose by taking. Put another way, let's say you have a decision which is borderline when playing a bot, because of its game and gammon chances, so you seem to be far from a take against a weak opponent. But the weak opponent, playing a complex game, doesn't have the same game and gammon winning chances as a bot.

Certainly there are exceptions, but my guideline was that in general you drop the races and take the blitzes. It is a complicated subject, addressed in much greater detail in the book.
