China is completely different indeed, and foreign table tennis players such as Waldner are popular as well in China (opened a restaurant). Chinese top players have been used to promote Porsche, for example, in China.

When she was playing, I am sure that more than 50% of the Dutch knew who Bettine Vriesekoop was. (Female player, went to China to train many times in the early 80s at young age, played in the male competition, very successful in Europe)
