Natural tendency of most of the people here is not to come under the gun. It was my natural tendency as well before the bots taught me otherwise.

The way I look at these kinds of positions is: making the 4pt is extremely good for white anyway, whether he points on you or not. Even if he does point on you when you enter on 21 it's not the end of the world, you'll likely enter from the bar and might even anchor with something like 32, 54, or (try to) escape 1 checker with 36 55 56.

Important thing to note here is that your opponent is going to roll a non-hitting combination (one containing either 1 or 6) 20/36 times. Just look at all the rolls when he rolls 1x or 6x, it's clear that splitting gains so much here. With the checker on 21 you threaten to either anchor up (with 3s) or escape that checker (with 5s and 6s) which is also a significant relief.
