I agree.

In your example, moving the spare from the mid to the 4 helps the race, but also make doubles play much more efficiently, so it would certainly reduce the messiness a bit. The impact on the race is the more important impact of the change (you realize this of course, I am just pointing this our for Robert, because the number of spares on the mid against a holding game is often an important factor).
