I don't have experience with what people use at Backgammon events. When you say above the board I'm unsure if you mean directly above the board or off to the side but above the board.

One companies products I do own (for non Backgammon related video/picture taking) is Joby's accessories for smartphones. I use it with my Samsung but it can be used to fit with most smartphones (including iPhones). It allows you to use any standard tripod to mount a smartphone horizontally or vertically:
