It seems to me that Hart headed the ball into a relatively safe area: what chance was there that a shot would come about from there, let alone one on target? Though skillful in the extreme, the goal was still a freak.

Reminds me (a little bit) of Uwe Seeler's headed equaliser against England in 1970. Was Bonetti out of position? Not really. You have to play the percentages. The desperate back header then, though its path may have been intended, looped across him into the far corner of the goal. Just as in backgammon, you can't play against all eventualities; you have to balance the probabilities.
