Advantages of playing online:

1. You get to choose when you play, e.g., when you are are awake and alert, not hungry, etc.

2. You get to eat a normal breakfast, sleep in your own bed, and don't have to travel.

3. There are (usually) fewer distractions playing online.

4. View of the board is customizable and, for some, better than playing on a real board.

Advantages of playing live:

1. Pace of play is slower, so more thinking time and less chance of miscuing. The process of picking up the dice and rolling helps keep you from making rash decisions.

2. The noise and tactile sensation allows some players to focus better. Subconsciously, your mind goes into "backgammon" mode.

3. Some people can see the game better on a real board.
