Don't kick yourself too hard, John. This is a fine play and the reasoning is oh so subtle and quite wonderful. 4/1(2)* has the added benefit of reducing the contact. If White enters high, it makes the job of "bringing it home" so much the easier in spite of White's potential holding game which, after 4/1(2)* does not appear to be that strong

In a curious test of backgammon skill, if all you were permitted to use was one evaluative tool i.e. estimating gammons, then, you may have gotten this one right!
