I believe tons of players would have made the same robotic normal looking play. This is why we can't be on auto pilot and in an ideal world we'd treat ever play as a decision and not blindly push checkers around.

What I would do is what I often do, go through the numbers after both plays.

After making the 5pt we have [66 64 63 53 31] 9 immediate blotting numbers. After playing 8/4 we have [43] 2 immediate blotting numbers.

That itself paints quite a picture. In going through all the numbers mentally you'll register how fugly the position plays after making the 5pt as a lot of numbers also play super awkward creating an even larger gap or still leaving a majorly stripped position. You may also note other details such as pointing, pick and passing, or new point making numbers.
