Doesn't the result depend on how discriminating a "match" is?

Suppose you played really long matches so that even a small difference in skill meant that the better player always won. And suppose you could rank all players in the world from best to worst. (Player X would sit at the 75 percentile mark and Player Y would sit at the 25 percentile mark.)

Under these assumptions, Player X would always win over Player Y.
