I think the best explanation of why you got three dice, is that in a multiverse, necessity and chance don't have to produce the same result every time.

I didn't have the patience to keep turning the sand timer myself in order to get the dice to re-form, so I trained some monkeys to do it for me, or so I thought. After I left the room, they instead typed out the complete works of William Shakespeare.
