I never heard of German reds... I really like the Chilean red that KLM serves, it is a very good one for an airline served wine. I am not a connoisseur at all, but I know what I like.

I live in Italy, and good Italian reds are dirt-cheap here, so that is where I get the best price-to-quality ratio, and the pleasure of supporting the local economy.

When I was in China, the best buys came from Australia. Chinese (western) wines are not good in general, although there are some extremely good ones from Western China. For some reason, those you could not get in Beijing.

I remember a conference in Yinchuan (Ningxia, China) - I had nominated red wine as the drink (to avoid drinking the Chinese baijou which I don't like at all; nominating the red was a purely defensive measure - you will not need to drink as much red wine as Chinese baijou), I was sitting next to an Italian from D'Appolonia, and I recall looking at him (and him looking at me) after the first taste - that red was quite something. Never learned the name, unfortunately.
