"An extra argument for paying later is that if your opponent isn't top notch, s/he will have a harder time playing out the position. If you pay now, opp's decisions are easier."

This is so very true from a position like this and note than after blotting inside there sometimes aren't too many ways for the opp to conveniently leave an extra blot to harass you more.
