Left or Right? Does it matter?

In Response To: Left or Right? Does it matter? (Michael Crane)

I've seen games where a player who had to roll in the home boards during bear-off had cocked the dice quite often, due to the large number and awkward position of some checkers. I only see this as a problem in timed games, since having to re-roll a bunch of times can eat away some precious time.

I think a good way around it would be for players to be congnizant of how they roll the dice. Paul Weaver never seems to cock the dice, no matter what the situation. You can tell he has given much thought into his rolling technique. Time is very precious and sloppy rolling can make a huge difference. I love Paul Weaver's technique. He has a very distinctive roll and it is very consistent. It's like gently pouring a cup of water.

I do not know if Mochy is cognizant of it, but his technique is also one to admire. From watching his videos, he often used to roll overhand (like turning on an ignition--the cup's top is turned toward the opponent) into the corners of the board and cock dice. He rarely does that now. I've noticed now he has a very unique circular "sidearm" technique of where the motion is not in the wrist. The arm comes from the side and he puts the dice in the middle of the field near the bar. He rarely cocks the dice now. It's sort of that "pouring" motion as Weaver's, but a little broader. I see he posts here so maybe he can comment. I may be talking out of my ass here.

The other thing to do would be to switch bear-off directions between games, I guess. I sort of like the rules as is. Sorry for the long post. Boring day today. haha
