This is a very illuminating post. Thanks for writing it.

If we consider things purely from an economic viewpoint for a moment, then focusing on famous participants makes good economic sense if you get a lot of income from spectators. In pro sports and other games that make a lot of money, spectation is the economic driver, whether directly through ticket sales or indirectly through concessions or advertising. I gather that this is not the case for the backgammon tournaments you're talking about. If the money comes primarily from entry fees, then it's absolutely true that one should not just unthinkingly adopt promotion practices from spectator sports and expect them to be effective here.
