White is Player 2
score: 1
pip: 1479 point match pip: 146
score: 0
Blue is Player 1XGID=-aa-ABDC----cC---b-ec---B-:0:0:1:21:0:1:0:9:10 Blue to play 21 I agree that this is not the time to split the anchor in the face of the opponent’s stacks.
For the 2, then, certainly it is correct to make the 4pt, but for the 1, I like bringing in the extra checker. That play leaves 4 checkers on the 6pt and 2 checkers on the 7pt.
I used to avoid putting 4 checkers on the 6pt in this sort of circumstance, but recently I have become aware that 3 checkers on the 7pt, and 1 spare on the 5pt is more unbalanced than 2 checkers on the 7pt and 2 spares on the 6pt. That is because in many circumstances, the checkers on the 7pt can both be viewed as spares. In addition, you get better play of doublets when spares are divided 2 and 2.
Of course, this trick does not always produce the best move, but I’ll try it here.
