The Gold medal for 2011 was won by Palamedes, which I had never heard of, but must be pretty good to have beaten Gnubg
the number of games was limited, and at the end of the day Backgammon is a game of dice...
Palamedes plays on the level of a very competent human but not on super human level (as both opponents did) and Palamedes plays Portes and not Backgammon (so no cube) which made some additionally rules necessary.
Besides Portes Palamedes plays Plakoto and Fevga (a.k.a Moultezim) too and it plays both very well. (I recommend to give both varianst a try: they are pretty different to BG so you don't ruin your game but it is close enough that you can use your knowledge. You may challenge me on PBEM (id: frankb33))I thought that it would be interesting to see a field with Extremegammon and Snowie competing as well.
You won't see Snowie on such an event. Even when it was in front of there door (Graz, 2003) they didn't even regarded it as necessary to answer my email.
In 2011 it was very close that Xavier has attended, but finally it didn't work. Maybe this year its different.
I personally wont attend in Yokohama, 2013. The journey is simply beyond my budget, but maybe I find s.o. to operate BGBlitz. Any volunteers (or for other bots)? It's fun, it's exciting and you meet nice people.
ciao Frank
