Top 10 Reason Not to Allow Computers in Tournaments*

1. It's harder for kibitzers to watch.
It may be harder to watch any random match but I would expect the matches that draw the biggest crowd to be projected onto a screen in the room. There could easily be 3 of these set up. Also, it may be harder to watch but just think about after the tournament if all the participants received a copy of their matches! (or maybe everyone's matches!?)
2. It takes away from the atmosphere of the room.
Says you. Just like I'm not a big fan of hearing all the bs going on in a bg room (that's why I often wear headphones) I'm not a fan of hearing every donkey in a poker room shuffle chips. I'd be more than content without this 'atmosphere'.
3. It's harder for Director (or kibitzers) to see that proper procedure is being followed.
In what sense? I doubt I agree with this one either but I'll let you expound first.
4. It splits the field in two, with different competitors playing under different conditions.
Some people play clocked matches, some people play with a baffle box or a tube, these are also different conditions but we have no problem with them? (esp. clocked v. unclocked)
5. Some players may feel pressured to play on computer when they don't want to.
I don't see anyone caving in to play clocked matches so I find it hard to swallow that they'd cave to play on a computer if they didn't want to.
6. It makes face-to-face tournaments more like online tournaments. Why pay hundreds of dollars to attend a tournament when you could do the same thing at home on your computer?
Because you can't do the same thing at home. Here you're playing for money, for trophies, against opponents you would probably never have the chance to play online.
7. Having computers around leads to the possibility of cheating.
8. There are no standard rules for playing on computer. Does computer enforce legal moves? Does computer show pip count? Does computer roll dice?
Easily rectified by creating a set of rules.
9. It introduces another piece of equipment you have to buy and bring along to a tournament if you want to enjoy the same advantages that others have.
A looooooooot of people already have a laptop so I doubt they'd have to buy it. They may even already bring it to the tournament (like me). Even if they don't and they didn't, they don't have to. Not everyone brings boards and we get by just fine. If there weren't enough computers to play on a computer we can play on a board. You're stating that playing on a computer is advantageous?
10. It is not environmentally friendly.
What?
