Sorry, but the format used is not appealing to me.
If one day the format is changed so the programs can play against each other using a standard interface (a local server) so programs can play hundreds of games during the tournament, I will seriously consider it, either in person or more likely using a operator.
The format has more than one aspect. I discussed letting the bots play directly against each other with Achim Müller some years ago and his point of view was "I don't travel through half Europe just to watch computers play each other. I can have that with less effort" and I understand this fully. BTW half of the fun is watching the play, looking at each other with disbelief at some moves and realize that both bots agree.
And if you let them play directly you will more or less see only the score and on the other hand to get some statistical significant results you need still far more games than can be played in 2-3 days.
A 3rd aspect. The manual approach has the least hurdle for participants. A maschine approach would have excluded Palamedes in 2011.
I'm totally open to any reasonable approach, I only try to get Backgammon participate. When Backgammon is a great game, a game of mind it should be represented on such events.
BTW I tried a year or two ago an base of the "dueller" protocol to establish something, but the response was low. Maybe with tiger gammon available we can use Fibs protocol.
so in a nutshell
- direct machine play has not only advantages. It's probably an excahnge between significance against fun
- I hope a Backgammon competition will happen in Computer Olympiade 2013
- I'm open to any reasonable solution
And finally: why not do a online tourney? Maybe some one can officially announce it (WBF or a national BG organization).
ciao
Frank
