I will give it a try (probably be wrong again): We have no anchor, fewer points, less men back, so we need to play conservatively. And opponent also has their five point. Opponent has blots inboard, but that is not enough for us to play aggressively. Midpoints are equal.
Nothing to hit. Can't make a point. Splitting the back two would be ridiculous. Need to run 1 or 2 checkers or slot. I don't see any decent running candidates.
Magriel doesn't favor slotting to a direct shot, but I don't think he would mind in this case as there isn't much else better to do.
Looking at Bray's criteria, I think slotting is optimal because: 1. It would be to hard to make the five "naturally" and we have the opportunity now to use *very* sparse resources effectively. 2. We need to unstack a heavy point (the 6). 3. It reduces the game to a 1 roll proposition (it puts pressure on white to roll a four). 4. It duplicates opponent's best number (the 4).
So I vote 8/5, if I am interpreting Magriel and Bray's criteria correctly, that is.
