Two further points, perhaps the first is too obvious to have been mentioned: make such plays early in a session. We're not going to gain much if we're near the pub/bar closing time.

The score may also make a difference. If fish has been lucky so far, then a successful big play by us might not have the desired effect if it still leaves said fish well ahead on scoresheet. In such cases, it's perhaps best to nibble back at his lead with sound plays.
