the simple 13-8 is first that gains nothing to game

13/8 changes a fifth checker on the 13 point into a third checker on the 8 point. Tha's a spare that can be used without giving up the 8 point. That's not "nothing."

In the early game, even changing a fifth checker on the 13 point into a fourth checker on the 8 point is a positional improvement (it's also 5 pips). Which side would you like to play in this position?
