Perhaps someone like Daniel will break it down fully with how all the upcoming rolls play and the roll after that how many save the gammon but for me visually if you play 18/10 here you've over run the position just a tad already. Same amount of crossovers, why not keep them both 'back' creating what I would assume is less wastage.

Another way to look at it is the 5 is forced, 18/13. After you move that checker you revert to the 'when in doubt grab the rearmost checker and move it' theory.
