Imagine an 11 point match. You are behind 9-10, and the last game was the Crawford game. This is sometimes referred to as -2 -1, where you are two points away from winning and your opponent is one point away from winning the match.
In this situation you are supposed to cube on your first turn, because if you lose a doubled game it costs as much as losing a undoubled game at this score. However if you win only a single point the score is 10-10, but if you win a doubled game you win the match. Thus it ought to be automatic to cube on the first chance when you are behind at -2 -1 post-Crawford.
On the other hand, your opponent is supposed to drop that cube if he is behind even a tiny bit, because after he drops the score is 10-10/11 and the odds of winning the match improve from perhaps 49.75% to 50%.
This chance to drop the cube and start all over at 10-10/11 is called the free drop since he has a free chance to get a better start to the game by declining the cube.
