We agree and disagree here, Phil.

I think it is as much, or more, about the competition than it is about the money. What other game/sport in the world exists where anyone can walk in off the street, enter a tournament, and have the opportunity to play, and at times beat, the very best players in the world -- few, if any.

The reasonably competent Championship level player knows he/she is a dog against the best, but he/she can be competitive and has a chance. What bigger thrill can a backgammon player have than to knock off one of the top players in the world? Or to string a few such wins together and win a major tournament? Any number have, including even me.

By the same token, the elite players, obviously, have better equity but they're also putting themselves on the line and face the real possibility of losing to Joe Schmo from Bozeman, Montana. It cuts both ways.

I can have great dice. I can play my best game ever -- as I did in Madison last year. An elite player can make a mistake or two. I can win.

I enjoy the thrill, the competition, and the privilege. I think many others do as well.
