Define "not so high" please. I think that many local clubs have a weekly or biweekly tournament with about a $20 entry. Would that work for you?

It’s relative.

If there were a Championship Division, as Phil proposed, with the kind of “big money” that would draw the top players, then the Open Division would be populated with players that are more like me. In that circumstance, I would be happy to risk, say, $20 to $40 in a local tournament, knowing that I had a reasonable expectation to have it all returned (minus the rake) in the long run.

If I am expected to play against the top players, including a couple of the Giants of Backgammon, then the $20 you mention sounds more like my speed. That I can just charge off as an entertainment expense.
