First, why should I, a 4.5 to 5.0 player, enter a tournament where there are 5 or 6 or more players who consistently play at 3.5 or less? There is no handicap. My return on investment is very low compared to theirs.

Because it's fun to play backgammon and meet other strong players? Whatever the reason, Phil, you enter many tournaments, so presumably you find them rewarding in some way.

How can we level the playing field?

There are already three divisions in major tournaments. How level do you want the playing field to be?

Maybe the answer is a separate division ... a true Masters event, or a "pro" division for top players to play for the "big money" and a true "Open Division" for good players who are not professionals and are there to test their skills and compete and want to have a reasonable chance to win.

The Open division is the most popular division. If players were looking for a better chance to win, wouldn't they be entering the Intermediate division instead?

Lower the entry fee; lower the prize money; make it more about the competition and winning points.

Players who want a lower entry fee and lower prize money can enter the Intermediate division.

It sounds like you are trying to have your cake and eat it too. You want the prestige of winning the Open division without having to face the competition.
